For at least 5,500 years, humans have used wind power for propelling their sailing ships and sail boats, and the use of windmills date back to 7th century AD where they were used to pump water for irrigation or for milling grain. In 1887 Professor James Blyth built a cloth sailed wind turbine that stood 33 ft high and was installed at Marykirk in Scotland, which was used to power their lighting and Professor Blyth offered the surplus electricity that was generated to the people of Marykirk.
